Help, and I mean serious help

Post by The Prez on Tue Oct 06, 2009 1:42 am

As many of you know, I have wanted to be a teacher for a very long time. Well I am in a requirement that does not allow electives, but I really want to do something with Psych, Anthro, and/or PolySci. Well PolySci and Anthro have no minors and the education requirement is going to force me to take a summer semester and I'm just wondering if I should even be bothering and whether I am so dedicated to teaching. And yet I am, but at the same time I feel this urge in wondering about whether or not it is easier just to quit Education, but if I quit Education then why I am I at Illinois? I picked Illinois because it allowed me to get education, but still allowing for a History DEGREE as the major, but Illinois is expensive as an out of stater and if I am going to screw over Education, then should I even be there. So yea, FREAKING OUT! For the first time in what I view as my whole life I don't know what I want to do with my degrees, I still have a strong urge to teach, but I really don't like the idea of having to get a degree in it, yet I have to it seems, then I look at Miranda whose degree is in Anthro and I wonder how he got into teaching and I basically am using him as a model solely because he serves my example that it can happen. And I don't want a teaching degree I want my other, better, more useful degrees and AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Email some of your old high school teachers and ask them about their paths to education. I think most of your favorites probably pursued a degree within their field, and then later went into education. I'm sure they would love to share their advice with you, teachers love students who want to teach.

I know Miranda went through a hellish amount of major changes and grunt jobs like landscaping and construction. You could ask him for the full story.

Do what you love. Don't ever do what you don't feel is the right thing. Have fun with it.

Basically I'm saying that you're a freshman and you have almost two years to make up your mind. Chill out.

What you could do is get a history bachelor's and an education masters.

First of all, Drew: CHILL OUT for like three seconds.
Second of all, listen to Ryan: do what you love.

My friend Amanda came into college being all, "I'm going to do a BS in Biology! BS in Biology! Bio bio bio bio bio med school!" Then, three weeks later: "I might become an English major..." So now she's planning on being an English major with minors in philosophy and bio and then going to med school later. But everybody was like, "AMANDA WHY ARE YOU SO WORRIED LIKE SRSLY YOU'RE FOUR WEEKS INTO BEING A FRESHMAN. YOU HAZ TIEM."

Basically, you haz tiem too. Do what you love and make sure you feel comfortable doing it. If you force yourself to teach, it's not going to be fun.

Also: how the eff can you not have minors in poly sci/anthro? Just out of curiosity...

PS. Be glad you're not a Speed (Engineering) student at UofL. Takes them five years, including summers. This is why I haven't seen my friend Seth in four weeks Sad

Yea, JMU has a "relaxed" engineering program and it's already too much for me. Not doing that, no matter how much job security it'll get me later in life.

I'm an English major. I have no security. Ever. However, once I go to Cambridge and study Shakespeare, people will want me to edit their stuff. Because I can. And because I'll be starving... and starving people work faster...

For once in my life I'm going to say this...

Max Lustig is right.

Now that that horrible experience is over...

You could always major in history and then get a Masters in education. Hell you could get a masters in history and then just get a teaching certificate. My brother is getting his certificate right now and he won't have a masters until after. If you really wanted to you could pull a Davidson and double major/minor, get a masters or two, and then get your teaching certificate. You have soooo much time to decide so here's what I think are the most important points to remember.

1. Take a deep breath. Now put everything in perspective. You have plenty of time. Worrying will only make the process more stressful and therefore your life more stressful.

2. Take your time and think of every outcome. If you're thinking of transferring or switching majors you have plenty of time to decide. Think it out until you know what you want.

3. Do what you love. If you really love teaching, become a teacher. But if you want to check out Psych, Anthro, PolySci, or even something else like Music then do it. There's almost always a way to do everything you want. Maybe you'll need to spend five years at college but if you get to do something you love for the rest of your life, what harm is done?

4. Talk to an adviser about it. Sometimes they can show you options that you didn't even think about or help you in some other way. I mean it can't hurt, right?

Good luck man.

I'm seeing my advisor on Thursday. You see the thing is what I am doing now is SO binding that it has to get done now. Plus, you are all saying GET THE MASTER'S LATER, but you forget that states vary. If I do that I am limited in where I can pursue said masters and begin my teaching career.

Oh and to clear things up, yes, I want to teach, but I would rather take in higher level courses and become more of an expert in my topic than just be like every other social studies teacher who took a bunch of lower level course so they could be varied.

I thought NY was one of the harder states on the matter and you need you're Master's no more than five years after you get your first full teaching job. If not, enlighten us.

BTW Drew, what Lustig said is kind of what I plan on doing with my life. Very Happy

Just chill and sit tight. If taking a bunch of engineering classes has taught me something, it's that when something looks like there's no freaking way to get by, there is. You just have to stick with it and sometimes wing it and go with your gut.

It is also what I plan to do, but not every state offers the chance to give jobs to people who do not have Education bachelors

Um, don't apply for a job in those states then?

BTW, I was really curious, do college guidance counselors actually do stuff?

My college advisor has been very helpful, actually. One of the nicest surprises of college.

academic advisors are amazing assets

And I would like to note that the states I can go in the Midwest are limited and I basically have to pick my grad school now or consider the Northeast. So yea, I will basically have to got to Madison

Drew -- if it makes you feel any better I've been talked into double majoring in English and Humanities because it's really easy, and then I can also minor in Philosophy. (Like, I was talked into doing it this morning because my advisor was like, "You thinking of double majoring?" and I was like, "Humanities?" and he was like, "yeah..." and apparently it's really easy because you just need to take some extra classes here and there.) But the point is that it's not necessarily all so set in stone.

Totally agree with Max. Perhaps study history/anthro/poly-sci (double major and a minor? double major?) and get your teaching stuff later...

Drew, you have at least a week and a half more to decide the rest of your life with total certainty. Chill out.

Making it up as you go, my favorite kind. Really, you have time (even a couple of weeks for a spring transfer (I think)).

UNIVERSITY of ILLINOIS at URBANA-CHAMPAIGN

It would be like SUNYB for SUNY Buffalo, but there are so many SUNY schools that there probably already is a B so its just UB
