Jason Mraz

Post by McSnuggles on Tue Jun 16, 2009 1:55 pm

I know people won't expect this.. but I'm listening to him a lot lately. Now that I'm Yours doesn't stalk me anymore I love the song. And Geek in the Pink is one of the best songs I've ever heard. I love it so much. And Gypsy MC is awesome too.

Hell I even figured out a really crappy-sounding-but-easy way to play I'm Yours on guitar.

To me, Jason Mraz is the poor man's Bob Dylan. He can't sing for the life of him, but his music is still good.

Poor man's Bob Dylan doesn't really make sense since half of Bob Dylan's songs are about being poor...

o im just pointing out the irony. But it still doesnt really make sense, as it infers that Bob Dylan is "Rich man's" music. AKA for the finer taste. Which isn't necesarily true.

No, it means he's not as good as Bob Dylan.

1. Jason Mraz actually has a really good voice. Try singing his stuff.

2. Will you two stop arguing in public?

3. selgguns, you're wrong.

This is a discussion thread....What's the point of posting it on a forum if you don't expect opinions?

What's the point of posting it on a forum if no one is going to discuss the actual topic and is just going to talk about Bob Dylan and argue over him saying the same thing back and forth for an entire thread?

I'm sorry, I still think his music sounds really bad, but that is just my opinion

Holy holyness you actually admitted you like him, Luke. I'm impressed.

Gypsy MC is great because it shows that he's actually not so bad at rap, which always surprised me. (Ditto Geek in the Pink -- saw him perform this live and he slipped in a bit of Dynamo of Volition, it was incredible.) Also, it's a live song, and Mraz is like 2149205702894 times better live than studio-recorded. Give him a guitar and he'll be fabulous.

Disagree on the Bob Dylan point, if only because I listened to a Mraz cover of "A Hard Rain's A-Gonna Fall" and then listened to the original and I didn't like the way Dylan sang it. Whereas when I heard the Mraz cover of "Good Old Fashioned Lover Boy" and then listened to the Queen original I thought Queen was better (but Jason did quite a good job with it).

The thing I love about his voice is that it is versatile. He can do folk and he can do jazz-y stuff. Blahhh I'm going to shut up before I start squealing and y'all start hating me.

He is way better live. He's just funny live really. And the black guy that plays with him is so good. Plus he adds in some really cool stuff. I've really only listened to him over youtube so most of the stuff is live. It's cool.

And Gypsy MC isn't really rap. This is the only version I've heard but I wouldn't consider it rap.

And I forgot about Dynamo of Volition. That guitar riff is just sooooo funky. I love it.

The thing about him is that he's just such a good performer. He really captures the audience every single time he plays. I saw a video of him playing A Beautiful Mess at the Nobel Peace Prize Awards and he rocked it. It was amazing... plus he has a Fedora and I really wish I could pull off a Fedora.

Tocaaaaaa! Sadly he wasn't playing at UB when I saw him but I do love Toca. He's so cool.

I think he's better live because he gets to banter with the audience, kind of like the Barenaked Ladies.

The Gypsy MC version I know is a bonus track from WSWDWST which I guess is different (it's called Gypsy MC/Mudhouse) and that version is definitely more rap-like than that version. I like this version a lot (why haven't I heard it before? haha).

I do not answer the phone if I do not know who is calling, I guess the whole point of it all is that we never know really...

Ohhh and I love that version of A Beautiful Mess. It's amazing that he gets to play stuff like that at those sorts of events, because it's really special and he's just so amazing. I think some of my favourite live videos of him on YouTube are these four: Dreamlife of Rand McNally, Rocket Man, 0% Interest, and Older Lover Undercover. They go in some order, but I can't really remember which. It's just him and Toca but man are they good.

That 0% Interest video is AWESOME. It's sooo good. I've never heard that song before. They're all really good but that one was a song I haven't heard him do so it was cool. Rocket man was alright but I still can't really listen to anyone doing that song without remembering William.

Try this. Throw a capo on over the 4th fret. Then play G, D, e minor, C. Then before the chorus play an A. Put I'm Yours on in the background. Easy as hell, not the same as how he plays it, but it sounds pretty good. I'll make a video if I get bored. Razz

Ahhh and I actually have a capo that fits my guitar! This is exciting.

0% Interest has always been one of my favourites, ditto Dreamlife.
